Lung Cancer Initiative

As a leading non-profit organization supporting lung cancer research and education, Lung Cancer Initiative specializes in connecting patients, survivors, and loved ones with the medical and research community.

The Challenge


Lung Cancer Initiative produces a variety of events each year across the Carolinas including peer-to-peer races, educational seminars, fundraising galas, and sporting events. This produces a high-volume of constituent and transaction data syncing into their Bloomerang CRM.

Their complex database (Raiser’s Edge NXT) made it difficult for multiple team members to sufficiently manage and maintain their workflows and data. The accessory fundraising tools and integrations were not smoothly integrated, which meant too much staff time cleaning the data manually.

The Solution


Toccata initially supported their existing Raiser’s Edge database until the right time to transition into a more user-friendly fundraising platform that would be easier for staff to utilize and maintain.

In 2023, we led the migration of their data from RENXT to Bloomerang CRM, and their peer-to-peer events from Luminate to Bloomerang Fundraising. We used this as an  opportunity to fully overhaul their data structure so that it was no longer based on outdated processes.

Specifically, Toccata:

  • Identified and purged unengaged constituents (reducing costs of the new Bloomerang CRM).

  • restructured their gift tracking / coding system for consistent and accurate financial reports

  • eliminated custom fields that were no longer relevant, making it easier to identify and find information about their most engaged constituents

  • cleaned and organized their donors into a household and organizational record structure so that they could pull quick, targeted mailing lists

  • set up advanced custom reports, such as regional lists for targeted mailings

  • set up a smooth integration between each of their peer-to-peer event forms in Bloomerang Fundraising, mapping to the new gift coding system

  • created an automated system for maintaining their constituents

The Outcome


LCI now has a Bloomerang suite of tools that is easy for their team to use, quickly retrieve the information they need.

Toccata has continued to provide support to LCI through Momentum monthly services to ensure accuracy of their high-volume data inflow, advise and implement new Bloomerang features, maintain workflows and troubleshooting issues as they arise.
